Every time I purchase something which comes in liquid form at a 7-11 in Bangkok, the cashier always gives me a straw. It does not matter what the liquid is, or what the size of the container is. Each liquid item gets a straw.
I have to wonder though – do Thais really consume all of these items with straws? Do Thais drink beer through straws?? Do they drink water from big bottles like this one through straws??
I’ve never seen any Thais doing this. So why do 7-11 employees give me straws when I buy beer? Is this some kind of plot? If so, what is the purpose? I’m really confused.

This is really interesting observation. And I agree with your assumption that we (the Thais) don’t use straws for drinking beer, big bottle of water, wine cooler etc. But the staffs @ 7-11 just give their customer because they don’t even think which liquid should use with straws. And oh! they don’t give their customer the size and type of straw which is suitable with liquid type. So it isn’t in their conscious mind (some of them) to realize this is too extravagant. Probably, they think that just give many straws for customers’ convenience? Or they may think that they could give straws as much as they want because they aren’t the owner of 7-11?
Ok, well at the 7-11 I have been going to, they have been very good at attempting to give straws which fit the size of the container, although they obviously don’t have a straw big enough for one of those large bottles of water.
So something is not consistent here. I think this is a REALLY important study which someone should engage in = “the straw giving behavior of 7-11 cashiers in Bangkok.”
